Car falls from third level of parking garage

(KSWB) – Two women were hurt after their car fell off a parking structure in California.

The car dropped 35 to 40 feet from the third story parking level at Fashion Valley Mall.

The victims, both in their 40s, told police they were backing out of a parking stall just seconds before the crash.

"Hit something, pulled forward away from it, thought they put it in park," Lt. Dan Smyth, with the San Diego Police Department, said.

That's when the driver apparently hit the gas instead of the brake and plowed through the barrier, plunging to the pavement below, with the car landing on its roof.

"From what I'm being told, this is not the first time at Fashion Valley Mall," Smyth said.

It's unclear whether the driver may have been distracted.

It happened just before 8 p.m. as the mall was about to close.

Onlookers were grateful the car didn't land on another vehicle, or even worse, shoppers walking by.
