Family mourns autistic son, 6, killed after wandering into street

HIGHLANDS, Texas – A Humble family is speaking out after the loss of their 6-year-old autistic son in a tragic accident.

"I just want to bring awareness to autism. It happens and kids wander," the victim's father, Greg Rodriguez, said.

Aiden Rodriguez died Sunday after he walked out of a Highlands restaurant onto South Main Street and was struck by a pickup truck.

"He was just a very beautiful boy with the sweetest heart," he said.

One year ago, Aiden underwent open heart surgery. His family had spent the last year celebrating all he had overcome.

"My son did have a lot of complications and many things he overcame in life, but his family's always been there for him. My wife, myself and my daughter," Greg Rodriguez said. "I just thank God for the six years he gave me."

The Harris County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the accident.

Funeral arrangements are pending. If you would like to help, click this link to the family's GoFundMe account.
