HPD: Man shot in face by his own gun after toddler picks it up

HOUSTON – Houston police are investigating an incident in which a man was shot while trying to get a loaded gun away from a toddler.

The shooting happened Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

Police said Patrick Sanders, 20, was sleeping on the couch in the living room of an apartment at 4700 Wenda when his gun fell out of his pants pocket onto the floor.

According to investigators, as Sanders woke up, a 3-year-old boy in the apartment picked up the gun. Sanders saw the child with the gun and he tried to grab it. At that time, investigators said the gun went off and Sanders was shot in the face.

Sanders was transported to the hospital where he remains in critical condition.

The child was not injured.
