SAN JACINTO COUNTY, Texas – A man is dead and another man is hurt after a plane crashed in Shepherd near San Jacinto County, authorities said.

The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. Saturday at a private air field.

The aircraft was an experimental plane built by the pilot, identified as 44-year-old Marcus Schmitt, of Shepherd.

According to a trooper, witnesses said the pilot overshot the runway and ran into a treeline. The plane started breaking apart when it hit the treeline.

Schmitt died at the scene. The other man who rode as a passenger in the plane -- identified as 35-year-old Rene Weatherford, of Houston -- was taken to the hospital via Life Flight with two broken legs and multiple fractures, authorities said.
