Chain-reaction crash sends drivers into rain-swollen ditch near George Bush Park

The Jaws of Life had to be used to free a person trapped inside a car after a multi-vehicle accident near George Bush Park Thursday morning.

At least five cars were involved in the chain-reaction crash which happened on Westheimer Parkway near Fry Road.

According to investigators, the driver of a white Subaru was traveling westbound on Westheimer Parkway around 6:30 a.m. when he lost control, crossed the median, then struck a tree and four other vehicles.  Those four vehicles, including a blue Jaguar, ran into the rain-swollen ditch.

The Jaguar driver became trapped and had to be extracted by Houston firefighters and Precinct 5 deputy constables.  He suffered a broken leg and multiple broken ribs, authorities said.

Four people were transported to the hospital.

The eastbound lanes of Westheimer Parkway remain closed.
