Driver hits 18-wheeler while racing down Katy Freeway

KATY, Texas – A driver was hospitalized in serious condition after an accident involving an 18-wheeler on the Katy Freeway.

According to witnesses, he was racing another car on the freeway around 11:20 p.m. Saturday, topping speeds of 100 miles per hour, when he hit the side of the 18-wheeler.

"I felt a jerk, and I look back in the mirror and I see a car spinning around in circles on the freeway," said Llyod Smith, who was driving the semi at the time. "And then he hit again on the side of my truck."

Smith said he stopped and called 911. When emergency crews arrived at the scene, witnesses said firefighters had to pry him out of the car.

"He was talking and conscious, it just seemed like he was a little bit shocked," Smith said.

The driver was taken to the hospital.

Smith was not injured.
