Hype builds to a frenzy over Texas A&M-Alabama game in College Station

HOUSTON – After last year's upset win by Texas A&M over Alabama, this year's game has generated white hot attention on this important SEC rematch.

ESPN has been referring to the Saturday 2:30pm meeting as the "Game of the Century." That may be a bit much, but Kyle Field in College Station has been sold out for months and millions more will watch on TV.

It doesn't take much for A&M fans to support the Aggies but this year with a number one ranked Alabama team coming in, judging by the activity at the Academy store on the Southwest Freeway near Kirby the A&M gear is red hot.

Javier Casteneda was among a store full of A&M faithful. He was looking for a jersey for his 2-year-old son. He says it's never to early to put children in the right kind of attire.

"The week he was born he was wearing an A&M jersey," Casteneda said. "He's definitely headed on the right path."

Jeff Svatek's father graduated from Texas A&M and so did he and his sister. His plan is to head to his father's house so the whole family can watch the game together.

"I'm cautiously optimistic but we're excited," he said. "I think we've got a good shot at it with Johnny Manziel."

The Houston A&M Club says there will be several pubs and clubs around Houston hosting watch parties for the big game. The Pub Fiction Bar in Midtown has hosted hundreds of Aggie fans for regular games and expects a full house for Saturday with 60 TVs tuned to the game.

Former President George H.W. Bush, who has his Presidential Library on the Texas A&M campus, made it clear in an e-mail to USA Today about his allegiance.

"We have always respected the traditions and values that Texas A&M represents, so it's not been hard for us to root for the Aggies on or off the field," he wrote.

It's tough to find many Alabama fans in southeast Texas this weekend but the odds makers say that doesn't matter. They've picked the Crimson Tide to win by at least one touchdown.
