PASADENA, Texas – While most people were pulling up the covers, a group in Pasadena were pulling on their running shoes for a cure.
For the Garcia family and their friends, the 4:30 a.m. run for breast cancer awareness was a very personal one.
Gerry Garcia's wife of ten years, Ana, was 30-years-old when she was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer, a very rare and aggressive cancer that she battled for five years.
"Breast cancer awareness. Most people think it's someone else's problem," said Garcia.
With a police escort, four runners dressed in pink wanted to honor Garcia's wife and perhaps raise some money in the process. They ran 30 miles, from the medical center to the place where Ana was buried in Pasadena.
"I wanted to do something big. Something different," said Daniel Barron, Ana Garcia's brother.
"She's our number one motivation. We thought about the pain and the struggle she went through of breast cancer. I thought a 30 mile run is nothing compared to what she went through," said Barron.
October 1 would have been Ana's 38th birthday.
This race was a precursor to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday, October 6. Local 2's Khambrel Marshall will emcee the event.
