HOUSTON – A City Council race in Webster came down to a game of chance and a little help from lady luck.
"Whoever won it was going to be alright. I'm just glad I did," said Diana Newland.
The runoff for the Position 1 City Council race in Webster was a tie between Newland and Edward Lapeyre. The recount was also a tie, leading city officials to pull out the dice.
"The Texas election law states if there is a tie vote, it will be settled by casting of lots, which is cards or dice," said Webster city secretary Pauline Small.
The tie in this race was not easy to break. According to Small, the first roll of the dice sent the cubes tumbling off the table. A second toss ended in a tie. The third roll however was the decider.
Newland rolled a 5, Lapeyre rolled a 4.
"It didn't come out in my favor but we're happy to have it settled," said Lapeyre.
Thanks to that roll of the dice, Newland will fill the seat.
