2 remain hospitalized after roof collapses at west Harris County home

KATY, Texas – Two people remain hospitalized after Thursday's floor collapse at a home in Katy.

More than 100 people had gathered for a religious event. Investigators say the floor couldn't handle the weight and collapsed, turning a celebration into a chaotic scene.

A private insurance comapny stopped by the home Friday to speak with the owners, but no one local agency appears to be in charge of leading the investigation.

The majority of the people who were injured have been treated and released from area hospitals.

Suzy Lynn of Richard's Party Rental, who spoke to the homeowners before the party, describes them as nice people who were looking forward to hosting the event.

"It's terrible," she said. "They were really nice. They sat and visited with us, they offered us drinks. Then we see this on the news. I knew it was this house right away."

A work crew began taking down decorations Friday. Once the tent was removed, the damage to the garage was glaring. The door appeared broken, likely from the weight of people and debris against it when the second floor of the 600-square-foot apartment collapsed into the garage.

On the side, you can see where wood cracked and buckled under pressure.

While the damage is extensive, people who attended the party say they are grateful everyone survived.

"Everybody's fine," a partygoer said. "Most of them are back home. Nothing major."

The owners of the home repeatedly told KPRC Local 2 they did not want to speak to the media. Those who know them say they are simply embarrassed about what happened.
