HOUSTON - Two people have lost their lives in a major accident on US-290 west at Mason Road Thursday morning.
Harris County deputies said an 18-wheeler and a car collided, killing two people and causing a hazmat spill.
According to deputies, the car was broken down in a lane of traffic near a construction area where there was no shoulder. The driver tried to wave down the truck but the 18-wheeler hit the car, killing a person in the back seat. The driver of the big rig died after the truck's cab caught fire.
According to investigators, the driver of the car was on the side of the road, three other people were inside the car. Two managed to get out and were taken to an area hospital for unknown injuries.
The highway reopened Thursday afternoon.
