HOUSTON - A man and woman were arrested after leaving their children alone in a Westchase area apartment, according to Houston police.

Samantha Yevette Garza, 23, and Rafael Rosales, 24, were charged with abandoning a child with intent to return.

A 4-year-old boy approached a stranger at a convenience store in the 13600 block of Westheimer around 6 p.m. Tuesday. He was alone and said he was looking for his parents.

The boy led the stranger back to his apartment in the 2500 block of Panagard. The security guard recognized the child and called police.

When police entered the apartment, they found a 1-year-old asleep in a crib. No parents were home, but the apartment was clean and there was food.

Police reached Garza, the boy's mother, on the phone. She then returned with Rosales, who is the father of the 1-year-old.

Garza and Rosales said they had to go to a check cashing business and locked the door when they left, police say.

They were arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail, and each given a $2,000 bond.

The children were handed over to family members.
