2 escape, firefighter injured in SE Houston house fire

HOUSTON – A fire destroyed a home in southeast Houston Thursday, leaving a family homeless.

The fire happened at 6626 Hirondel Ct. around 1:45 p.m.

Two people made it out of the burning house before the Houston Fire Department arrived.

District Chief Christopher Chavez said the wind conditions made the fire fighting challenging, likening it a to blow torch.

“We tried to beat the fire from the outside and we weren’t very successful,” Chavez said. “We finally did get it knocked down, but the back was very heavily involved the wind was blowing from south to north.”

Two people were inside the home during the time of the fire. Both made it out safely, but a firefighter was injured. Chavez said that firefighter was transported to a hospital for a lacerated leg, which would require stitches.

Dorsey Landry has lived at the home that was destroyed all his life. His mother bought it back in 1973. The family lost everything in the fire. The house is uninhabitable and their three cars were also destroyed.

“Everything we had of value was in this house. All of our pictures, baby pictures, our memories from our past loved ones,” Landry said.

Landry said his family is now homeless and don’t know what’s next. The American Red Cross is assisting the family with what comes next, according to Chavez.

Firefighters believe the fire started in the back of the home. Landry told KPRC he suspects the hot water heater in the garage might have blown up. The official cause is under investigation.
