Bunnies taken from Victorian Bed and Breakfast Bunny Sanctuary in Galveston

GALVESTON, Texas – Two men stole two bunnies from a Galveston bed and breakfast and bunny sanctuary, and the theft was caught on camera, investigators said.

Galveston police said the men took the pedigree rabbits from the Victorian Bed and Breakfast Bunny Sanctuary in the 500 block of 17th Street about 2 a.m. on July 14.

"These guys were not interested in breaking in our door or looking in our windows," innkeeper Marcy Hanson said. "They were here to steal our bunnies."

The stolen bunnies were part of a group of nearly a dozen bunnies that roamed around the sanctuary, which is free to the public. The sanctuary has closed its gates because of the theft.

"We used to get Greyhound busloads of tourists," Hanson said. "Sometimes over 100 a day would come in to visit with the bunnies."

Hanson said the bunny sanctuary will be closed until she can be sure the rest of the bunnies are safe.

Hanson estimated that each stolen bunny was worth $400.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call Galveston police at 409-765-3778.
