HOUSTON - A frightened 12-year-old grabbed a knife and ran into a bathroom when an intruder broke into her family's home in Cypress on Monday afternoon, deputies said.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the girl was home alone in the 17900 block of Oakfield Lane and Rustic Ridge at around 12:45 p.m. when she heard the door bell ring. She did not answer it.

About 20 minutes later, the girl heard a breaking noise and saw a man entering the house.

"I heard slamming on the door and that's about it," said Amrit Jandu. "I looked outside the window and I saw him."

The 12-year-old was home alone and told Local 2 she could tell someone was trying to get inside her family's Cypress home. She grabbed a knife and her dog, Samson, and hid.

"I locked myself in the bathroom, called my dada and then 911,"  she said. "He went into the master bedroom and took everything out. He got jewelry and put it in the bag."

Sheriff's deputies arrived a short time after Amrit's call to 911 and they likely scared the man off. He took off running and left the bag of jewelry behind.

Investigators found him hiding in the backyard of a neighbor's house a few doors down. Amrit was able to identify him and now he's headed to jail.

Amrit's mom and dad said they've always told her what to do in a situation like this and it's obvious she listened.

"She's so brave and is very sweet," said Jasvar Jandu, Amrit's mom. "She's so brave and I'm proud of her."
