Dozens of students, bus driver sent to hospital after Cleveland ISD crash

CLEVELAND, Texas – Tracks on the side of a Liberty County road look harmless enough, but they're the result of a school bus accident that sent 65 students and their driver to the Cleveland Emergency Hospital.

"A lot of them were just traumatized and scared by what had occurred," said Cleveland ISD police Chief Rex Evans.

Video from a Channel 2 viewer showed the aftermath of what police said occurred around 4 Wednesday afternoon.

They said the bus -- filled with 4th and 5th graders from Eastside Intermediate School -- was travelling on FM 1010 near Highway 105 when, according to investigators, the driver swerved to avoid two other vehicles that had been involved in a separate incident.

"With all the heavy rains, with all the mud on each side of the road out there, he just lost control on the mud," said Chief Evans. "The bus went into the ditch."

The bus wound up partially on its right side in the ditch.

Emergency agencies from several different departments converged on the scene to eventually transport the students and their driver to the hospital.

Ten students were admitted for further examination.

Thankfully, there were no major injuries, just a lot of frayed emotions amongst the students and their parents alike.

"We're just very, very fortunate," said Evans. "This could've been much worse, and we're just grateful everyone is going home tonight."

This was just the second day of school for the students who just returned from Christmas break.
