2 men shot to death in Third Ward area, police say

HOUSTON – Two men were killed Tuesday evening in a shooting in the Third Ward area, officials said.

The shooting was reported around 4:45 p.m. in the 2600 block of Winbern Street, near Nagle and Alabama streets.

Police said two groups of people were arguing when gunshots rang out.

"Upon arriving, the officers learned there were apparently two groups that were involved in the shooting and two men were mortally wounded," Ivan Ulloa, an officer with the Houston Police Department's Homicide Division, said.

One of the men died at the scene. The other man died upon arrival at Ben Taub Hospital.

Police did not know the motive behind the shooting or whether the two victims were friends or foes.

The grandfather of one of the men was trying to figure out exactly what happened.

"Detectives are telling me that he got shot in the back of the head, didn't have no clothes on. Supposedly a robbery or something. I don't know," Earl Wilson said.

Wilson and his family identified one of the victims as 17-year-old Lay Andre Fontentot.

Detectives said they don't have much to go on, as not a lot of the witnesses are talking.

"Very little, very little. That's one of the reasons we don't have much information to provide," said Ulloa.

Officers said they believe there are other people involved.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
