1 dead after crash with school bus

NEAR TOMBALL, Texas – A car slammed into the back of a Waller Independent School District bus Wednesday, killing one person.

The accident happened in the 23700 block of FM 2920, near Tomball, shortly before 6 a.m.

Waller ISD officials said school bus No. 12 was on its morning route and stopped at its first stop on FM 2920 to load three students when a car rear-ended the bus.

"There's no indication at all that the driver braked before striking the back of the bus," Deputy David Pearson said. "There shouldn't be any reason not to be looking ahead and not to have seen this bus stopped in the roadway with the lights activated. Somebody's not paying attention."

Gerry Gueldner's three grandchildren had just gotten on the bus when the impact rattled them. Gueldner said her daughter was watching her kids from the driveway.

"She saw it coming up and it was coming at a pretty good speed, but she said, 'I thought it was going to slow down,'" Gueldner said.

The students and bus driver on board were not injured.

Authorities said the bus was flashing red lights and a stop sign was deployed.

The Honda Accord was pinned under the bus. The driver, a 25- to 35-year-old man, died on impact, officials said. The victim's name was not released.

Investigators are examining several possible causes, including fog, a distracted driver, drugs or alcohol.
