Woman dead, 5-year-old in critical condition after crash in Arcola

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – Witnesses say the impact of the horrible head-on crash was so intense they could hear it and feel it.

They also said they saw the driver of the Lincoln Town Car swerving seconds before he ran into a woman driving a Ford Taurus.

"It was so loud. So when we came over here we saw it," one witness said.

"The guy was swerving really bad to the point where they thought they needed to call authorities to alert them. Apparently, he swerved a little bit to far to the right. He knew it. Tried to get back right in the direction of the road and ended up going head on with her," another witness said.

Joyce Walton and her 5-year-old granddaughter were inside the Ford.

Sadly, Walton died at the scene.

Paramedics rushed the child to the hospital in critical condition.

"Well, whenever there's a child involved, it tends to hit home a little more. But, a life's lost here, so we gotta do the best we can," Danny Beckworth with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office said.

The driver of the Lincoln, Ricky Richardson, 60, performed a field sobriety test at the scene -- which we are told is standard.

He was then taken to the hospital where investiigators say he allowed them to draw blood for a more thorough examiniation to see if he was under the influence at the time of the crash.

Those results are not in yet and the crash remains under investigation.
