From the courtroom to the fashion world

A lawyer-turned-designer is making bags with African textiles, modern styles

HOUSTON – Annette Njau was a lawyer for eight years before she took a leap of faith and created a lifestyle brand that focuses on modern travel bags made with traditional African textiles. It’s called House of Takura and represents her upbringing.
She was born in Sierra Leone and moved to the United States when she was 10 years old. The designs are a mix of the two places she has lived. “Our stuff is very contemporary and it’s a hybrid of different things either textiles or cultures and that’s how we like to see the brand” said Njau.

The travel bags come in a variety of sizes and styles, and she also has other items with African prints such as scarfs or jackets to match the look, while still keeping it modern.
