Is it better to have the thermostat set in the 60s or 70s?

HOUSTON – As we head into cooler temps this weekend, it will be very tempting to turn on the heaters ... Now the arguments begin!

Is it better to have the thermostat set in the 60s or 70s?

One study out of Berkeley recommends offices that want productive employees to set thermostats at 72.

In general, women feel colder than men do at the same air temperature.  Scientific studies say that women, on average, prefer rooms at 77 degrees, while men prefer 72.

Meaning the solution about where to set the thermostat may never be clear. However, sleep experts say there is a correct temperature to snooze!

According to the National Sleep Foundation, 67 degrees or lower is what your bedroom should be at night. Sugar Land Dr. Mauricio Reinoso says maybe a degree or two higher, but he says you should not be sleeping in the 70s.

“Do not overdo it with your heater. So 68 degrees, 70 degrees at the most, that would be the ideal temperature,” he said.

Sleeping in a cold room to get a good night's rest is among the mix of six ways Alison Jefferies recommends avoiding cancer.

"A few degrees from what you normally are living at during the day is a good measure and then taking it down degree by degree to finding the right temp for yourself," Jefferies said.

The National Sleep Foundation said children should sleep between 65 and 70 degrees.

During the day, the recommendation from the U.S. Department of Energy is to set thermostats to 78 degrees to save you money.
