HOUSTON – Year-round, your face and hands are taking on the elements. That's why it's important to arm them with moisture that will create a protective barrier on your skin.
As we head into winter, here's what you need to know, according to Dr. John Share, age management specialist at Share Wellness.
Moisture Bomb / Hydro Boost
For daytime, Share said to look for something light, with a sunscreen.
During summer months, gels are a popular option since they're not heavy, but he says, even in winter this is good for dehydrated skin, meaning skin that doesn't retain moisture. These often contain hyaluronic acid.
“Hyaluronic acid attracts moisture and can hold up to a thousand times its weight in water,” he said.
It also gives skin a youthful look and can be used before applying lotion or cream.
Vitamin A/retinol
This is also helpful if anti-aging is your goal.
This works by generating cellular turnover from the inside out, which helps healthy cells grow at a faster rate.
Peptides
This ingredient in lotions will help minimize the signs of aging such as fine wrinkles, according to Share.
“With use over time, certain peptides have a mild Botox effect… relaxes the muscles in the face so fine lines are not as apparent,” he said.
Night cream
Thicker creams should be used before bed and not during the day, unless you have extremely dry skin.
Vaseline
Thick balms like Vaseline are a classic, but Share said many people may need to avoid this.
“Lots of people can develop a sensitivity to petroleum products and end up having rash, like eczema-type reactions,” he said.
Manuka Honey
Some people swear products like Honey Skin with Manuka Honey can relieve skin reactions and Share confirms it will help.
“[It has] very special healing properties, it's used in wound care to help heal wounds for instance. So, that's the key ingredient and what makes this particular product special,” he said.
Ceramides
You may consider a product containing ceramides to create a barrier against wind and dry air in the winter.
