Getting picture perfect nails safely

When asked what health concerns women have about nail salons, Virginia Rodriguez said how salons are sanitizing worries her most.

“I don’t know how well they do their cleaning and everything. So, if they're doing it properly,” Rodriguez said. “Bacteria can grow everywhere essentially.”

Doctor Thomas Knackstedt is a dermatologist who specializes in nail disease. He said 'overzealous' nail care, like aggressive trimming of cuticles and cleaning underneath the nail, can cause pain and infection.

However, the more likely problems to experience come from allergic reactions.

"Those acrylate-type of glues can cause a lot of allergies that can be very challenging to diagnose. Often times the allergic response won't present around the nail, but it will present around the lips or the eyelids - areas that we commonly touch,” Dr. Knackstedt said.

He said consumers should pay attention to the ingredient listings on their nail care products, especially if they have an allergy to a specific ingredient.

The US Food and Drug Administration recently issued guidelines for nail products, highlighting the importance of following directions and heeding warning labels.

They also address the safety of ultraviolet nail-curing lamps to dry gel polish manicures, since many people worry about the safety of lamps with well-known hazards of tanning beds and UV exposure to the skin.

But the doctor said previous research has shown there's generally a low risk, unless a person is taking medication or has a condition that makes them more susceptible to UV light.

"Even on a weekly basis, is very low, to the point where it is unlikely to cause skin cancer, which is what we worry about most."

That's goood news for the women who go often.

“I use it all the time, haven't had any issues yet, so far so good,” Secreta Mansion said.

Many of us like to treat ourselves to a nice manicure every now and then, but it's important to make sure that the products we use are safe.
