Freebie Friday: Fun things to do in Houston area for free

Weekend warriors, moms and dads: Grab your coats and start the new year by exploring our great city. We've compiled a list of some of the places you can hit up this weekend that won't hit you up for an entry fee.

It's a two-fer freebie at Discovery Green this weekend. Walk the Enchanted Promenade at dusk and marvel at the giant lit peonies that stretch 19 feet into the sky. The art installation is only at Discovery Green through mid-February. Then head over to the ice rink where you can catch Houston's Skating Starz Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

Houston's Touchdown Tour to get your family ready for Super Bowl 51 in the Bayou City is headed to Burnett Bayland Park this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It's a celebration of football with games, exhibits and food.

Head to Houston's east side for Eado Vintage Fest Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
In the 4000 block of Polk Street, you'll find vintage wear and gear from more than a dozen vendors and food as you check out Houston's newest hipster hot spot.

If you're more outdoorsy than eclectic, take the fam to the Armand Bayou Nature Center in Pasadena. The first and third Sunday of every month are free.
