HOUSTON – Wienerschnitzel has returned to the Houston-area with its first new hot dog restaurant.
The location opened Sunday in New Caney. Its the first of 32 planned locations across the Houston area over a 15-year period, the company said.
The New Caney location, with a drive-thru, at Highway 59 and FM 1485 is one of three flagship training facilities expected to open during the first phase.
The first Houston-area Wienerschnitzel restaurant was originally expected to open in 2017, but was delayed due to several factors, including Hurricane Harvey.
The second location is expected to open in Baytown in late 2019, the company said.
Other Houston locations will be announced later this year, according to the company.
"Wienerschnitzel has been part of the Texas family dining scene since we sold our first hot dog in Amarillo in 1968 – so it's only fitting that we give Houstonians the chance to experience our Chili Cheese Dogs, Chili Cheese Fries and Tastee-Freez frozen desserts for themselves," Ted Milburn, Wienerschnitzel director of U.S. franchise development, said.
Wienerschnitzel had some stores in the Houston market during the 1970s and 1980s, with the last one closing in the early 1990s, according to the company.
What is Wienerschnitzel?
The restaurant menu features hot dogs, chili dogs, corn dogs, burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries, jalapeno poppers, chili cheese fries, as well as soft drinks, fruit lemonades and tastee freeze shakes and freezees.
Wienerschnitzel was founded in 1961 in Southern California.
The family-owned company has more than 325 franchises in 10 states.
Most of the Texas locations are concentrated in Amarillo, Dallas-Fort Worth, Corpus Christi, El Paso and Lubbock, the company said.
