Houston Chef of the Month for August: Greg Martin
HOUSTON – Chef Greg Marin is a native Houstonian and a staple of the local restaurant community for over 25 years.
In 2014 he realized his life-long goal of launching his restaurant Bistro Menil, located on the Menil Collection Campus. Greg developed the concept for Bistro Menil over several years of international travel, enjoying outstanding regional food and wine in Spain, France, and Italy. His visits to authentic bistros inspired him to share his culinary experiences.
His menus feature European-inspired, American fare paired with select wines. A focus on fresh, local ingredients in food offerings and his meticulous selection of wines is evident with his weekly specials and seasonal menus. "I want to reclaim the classic definition of a bistro here by providing casual dining in a friendly, lively and wine-focused establishment," says Martin.
Chef Martin has worked with several cooking luminaries, including American icon of French cooking Julia Child. He honed his skills as Chef de Cuisine at Cafe Anne under the guidance of Robert Del Grande before becoming a corporate chef. He established a restaurant consulting business prior to opening Bistro Menil.
He can often be found chatting with customers about travel and is currently working hard on his upcoming cookbook when not chasing after his two border collies Rocco and Enzo.
