Get your gals together: How to celebrate Galentine's Day in Houston

HOUSTON – Amy Poehler coined the term Galentine’s Day on “Parks & Recreation,” and for years, women have taken up the cause of her character Leslie Knope -- celebrating their gal pals with breakfast, outings and gifts.

So how can you celebrate Galentine’s Day this year? Whether you want to be over-the-top like Poehler’s character – complete with elaborate breakfast and gift bags -- or just celebrate by getting together and talking over coffee, here are a few ideas for celebrating Galentine’s Day wherever you are – but especially in Houston.

Just because you can’t have breakfast at breakfast time on a Tuesday, doesn't mean you can’t have breakfast for lunch or breakfast for dinner with your friends. Make your date and follow through! Galentine’s Day this year is also Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras, so that means pancakes. Slather on the syrup and enjoy time out with your friends. There are plenty of great brunch places around Houston, but if you want to keep it old school, go to The New York Bagel Shop or Tel-Wink Grill for some legit eating. Or you could invite your friends to your kitchen so the kids can join in.

Pancakes not your style? Try beignets! Chez Beignets and Crecent City Beignets are just some of the offerings in the Houston area.

Lots of gals have friends across the country who they want to connect with, but regularly don’t see in-person. Make a Skype/Google Hangouts/Facetime date to chat across the miles. You’ll remind yourself that friendships can be picked up and cherished no matter how much time has passed or how far apart life takes you and your besties.

Spend some time feeling just a little prettier with your pals. Get a manicure or pedicure. Get a massage. Nothing says “Happy Galentine’s Day” like colorful nails and relaxed shoulders.

A great friend will tell you what you should and should not wear -- or give you the confidence to wear it no matter what just because you love it. You don’t need to break the bank, but shopping with your friends, whether at Saks or the local thrift store (we’re looking at you, The Guild Shop and Blue Bird Circle), can remind you of fun times, and create new ones. And -- you just might walk away with a refreshed look!

Whether it’s somewhere in Texas or on the other side of the world, getting out of town with your friends is a good way to show them you love them and also that you value time with them. Last-minute tickets might be pricey, but you just might find a steal on SkyScanner.com or from a budget airline like Spirit or Frontier.
