Tax-free weekend: Everything you need to know

HOUSTON – Texas' tax-free weekend begins Friday and KPRC 2 has you covered. It's your chance to stock up on back to school supplies and clothes without paying sales tax.

The Sales Tax Holiday runs from 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, through midnight, Sunday, Aug. 9. The law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales taxes. The exemption is also in effect for online sales, telephone sales and sales by mail.

Here's a link to all of the information on the Texas comptroller's website.

There are some items designed for athletic activity that do not qualify. For a complete list of clothes and footwear, click here.

For backpacks, those with straps to wear on your back qualify, as well as backpacks with wheels but only if they can also be worn on the back.

The exemption applies to most school supplies, but does not include textbooks, computers and software. Click here for the full list of school supplies.

Many stores -- such as Kohl's, JC Penney, Bed Bath & Beyond -- still let you use coupons during tax-free weekend.

Some stores are even opening early or staying open later.

If you shop online, check for special codes from big retailers offering extra deals to skip the in-store crowds.
