HISD to hold community meetings at low-performing campuses at risk of closing

HOUSTON – The Houston Independent School District will host a series of community meetings to discuss the potential closing of several campuses.

The meetings will be held at schools that are in “improvement required” status as designated by the Texas Education Agency.

According to the district, 10 HISD campuses have fallen behind academically over the last four years and must meet all state standards this year. According to state law under House Bill 1842, if the school does not meet standards, the state will close the institution, appoint a board of managers to run the school district or order alternate management for these campuses.

Senate Bill 1882 provides options that could prevent these sanctions, including forming an outside partnership or closing and restarting a campus.

Trustees are holding meetings to discuss House Bill 1842 and Senate Bill 1882 and their potential impact on the at-risk campuses, including Blackshear, Dogan, Highland Heights, Mading and Wesley elementary schools, Henry Middle School, Woodson PK-8 and Kashmere, Wheatley and Worthing high schools.

Hilliard Elementary School, Cullen Middle School, and Madison and North Forest high schools were removed from the list of campuses facing changes under district recommendations. However, the community meetings will still be held, the district said.
