Grandma knows best! Age-old beauty products that stand test of time

HOUSTON – While we might have an arsenal of products in our beauty routine, the grandmas of today had much less to work with. And some of their tried and true products are still around and just as effective.

From family recipes to helpful advice, grandmas are known for passing down all sorts of knowledge. We wanted to steal a few secrets from her beauty routine with products that work just as well today as they did 50 years ago-- and they are pretty affordable too.

Coty Airspun Face Powder ($6)-  This powder debuted in the 1930s. The translucent shade works with just about any skin tone. It works great for under the eyes to keep mascara from getting on our face. You can also use it as a setting powder. 

Smith's Famous Rosebud Salve ($6) - This salve was first made in 1892 and can remedy a number of skin ailments including diaper rash. The product is lauded by fashion magazines for how well it heals dry, chapped lips. It even has a light pink hue that looks great on many skin tones.

Pond's Cold Cream ($5) -  This time-tested formula was created by a pharmacist in 1846 and is still your best way to cut through any makeup. It works great as a cleanser.

Maybelline Mascara ($5) - Did you know the signature pink and green bottled mascara has been around for 100 years? It's usually one of the cheapest options at the drug store; we paid $5 for one!

Witch Hazel ($3) - used as a toner and to help fix oily skin

Cocoa Butter - ($5) known for hydrating dry skin and healing stretch marks.

Common kitchen items for beauty use

Oatmeal - This affordable, healthy grain also has many household purposes. Oatmeal is moisturizing, and its antioxidant properties can be used in a mask or in a hot bath to soothe stressed out skin. 

Coconut Oil - has been used for centuries to help the body both inside and out. Coconut oil is an effective moisturizer for the hair and skin and can serve as a natural antifungal and antibacterial oil. 

Epsom Salt - Use Epsom salt to relieve pain, reduce muscle inflammation and to help ease migraine headaches.

Lemon Juice - put lemon juice on a cotton ball and rub it on your nails to help lighten yellow nails. It can also help lighten up dark skin spots. 

Egg Whites - egg whites work for a great face ask for oily skin. It will tighten pores and reduce the appearance of puffy eyes.
