Best Christmas gifts for the teacher in your life

HOUSTON – How are you doing on your gift list? You've got your kids, your spouse and family all done. But what about your kid's teachers?

Finding the right gift can be difficult. You want them to know you appreciate them, but you know they probably don't want a coffee mug from every kid in the class.

Consumer expert Amy Davis sat down with a group of six teachers with a combined 95 years in Houston-area classrooms to name some of the best gifts they've received from students.

"Starbucks gift cards are like the bomb," said Esther Burchert who teaches in Sheldon ISD.

Leigh Stovall teaches at Lutheran South Academy. She said she likes personal gifts.

"I always tell my students 'Bring me a copy of your favorite book or make me a CD of your favorite music,' so that I can kind of keep a finger on the pulse of what my teenagers are reading and listening to." Stovall said.

Football coach Alan McGrath from Montgomery High School said his team pitched in to buy him cowboy boots one year.

"And another year they got me a Montgomery Bear golf bag. And I've used that a lot, which is awesome. I just love it," he said.

Burchert said her class bought her a Kindle Fire one year.

All of the teachers agreed their favorite gifts are handmade notes and cards. They pull them out when they need a pick-up.

"I call it my rainy day folder," Stovall said.

"It's called my smile file," said Natalie Anderson of Montgomery ISD.
