AT&T to stop offering two-year contracts and other business news

AT&T is ringing in 2016 by ditching two-year contracts.

According to internal memos obtained by Engadget.com, the new policy will go into effect Jan. 8. According to the policy, if new and existing customers want a new phone, they’ll have to buy it, either paying full price up front or in installments.

In other business news, the Internal Revenue Service will open up tax season on Jan. 19. Early filers won’t have to wait long for a refund. The agency expects to issue more than nine out of 10 refunds in fewer than 21 days. The deadline for federal returns and requests for extensions is April 18.

Because Emancipation Day falls on the traditional April 15 deadline, the agency pushed back the deadline.
