Freebie Friday: Deals and events in Houston

While most of Texas celebrates Arbor Day in November, Houston strikes out on its own and gives back to Mother Earth in January. The city of Houston says in our climate the optimum tree planting period is October through February, so this Saturday you can roll up your sleeves and grab a shovel.

Sign up to get dirty and help Houston plant one thousand trees at 9 a.m. Saturday at Herman Brown ParkDon't just show up to this one. Volunteers do have to register in advance by emailing the city's Parks and Rec department at  Oneika.shelby@houstontx.gov.

No registration is required to join in Arbor Day festivities at the Houston Arboretum on Woodway Drive. Just show up Saturday anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for crafts, tree planting demonstrations and a free tree seedling.

In Humble the festivities are Saturday and Sunday at Jesse Jones Park from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Next week is Children's Book Week, but you can start early at Fort Bend County libraries this weekend. The Magik Theatre will perform "The Three Little Pigs" at the First Colony Library Saturday at 2 p.m. and again on Sunday at the George Memorial Library.

Or head to the Bookworm Festival at Spring Oaks Middle School in Spring Branch Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Young readers can meet children's authors and get their books signed.

Then mosey over to Minute Maid Park for Astros Fanfest Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fans can meet current and former players, enjoy a petting zoo, pony rides, run the bases and a lot more. Fanfest is free but you do need an admission voucher to get in. You can print yours online right now here
