Tristar recalls 1.4 million rugs over slip risk and other consumer news

After dozens of injuries including broken bones, Tristar is recalling 1.4 million shower rugs due to a fall hazard.

The rugs, sold under the Aquarug brand, are intended to provide a slip-resistant surface in the shower or tub. However, the suction cups can fail and cause the user to slip. The company has received 60 reports of people falling.

The Aquarugs were sold from July 2012 through September 2015 at various retailers, including Bed Bath & Beyond and Dollar General. Consumers can head to the Tristar website for information about a free replacement.

In other consumer news, nearly 49 million passports will expire within the next three years and government officials are warning there will be a flood of renewal requests through 2018. In 2007, legislators passed a law requiring citizens to use a passport when traveling to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

As a result, nearly 18 million passports were issued in 2007. Since passports are only good for 10 years, all will be up for renewal in 2018.

And Facebook is venturing onto Uber’s turf. The social media company has applied for a patent that hints at a ride-sharing feature. Facebook is looking to help users share cars or find a travel buddy through its event feature.

According to the patent application, Facebook would suggest ride services and map out the best route whenever a user responds to an event. The patent has not yet been approved.
