Wednesday's Warriors: Chelsea and Inez Moriarty

Mother-daughter duo motivated after beating blood cancer

HOUSTON – Chelsea Moriarty was diagnosed with leukemia shortly before her 10th birthday. After nearly dying, she battled back and beat her cancer, and now she and her mom are committed to using their experience to help others.

Chelsea was part of a clinical trial at Texas Children's Hospital. She had an allergic reaction to her medication that caused grand mal seizures that left her brain significantly damaged. Inexplicably, she recovered fully.

As to why she survived, she said, "I still don't have a good reason, but I figure it has to be a really good one. There's something important I need to do."

And she is, in fact, doing something really important. She starts medical school this fall at John Hopkins University. She'll be getting an MBA along with her M.D., too -- no small feat!

Her mom, Inez, is using the family's experience with cancer to do something big, too. She's an avid fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. To date, she has raised over $125,000 for cancer research.

Speaking of research, KPRC's Eric Braate is teaming up with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to raise funds for cancer research as he trains for and eventually competes in the Ironman World Championship Triathlon on Oct. 14. We need your help to make our $140,600 goal.
