TSU students create Black History Month vignettes

HOUSTON - In fall 2011, KPRC Local 2 approached Texas Southern University with the idea of a competition where film students would write, shoot and edit 25-second vignettes spotlighting various people, moments and movements in Houston's black history.  Students were given free reign and encouraged to challenge themselves on their selection and depiction of their subjects.  Along with the opportunity to have their work aired on KPRC Local 2 throughout Black History Month, students were given the added incentive of an internship at KPRC Local 2 for the student submission showing the best technical and editorial merit.

While all projects submitted showed promise and skill, three vignettes were chosen to air on KPRC and Click2Houston.com in February. The three students who created the selected vignettes are:

Kenneth Ware Jr. is a senior at Texas Southern University majoring in broadcast journalism.  Ware has experience in a number of multimedia platforms, including work as on-air correspondent for nationally-televised award shows, chief social media correspondent and as a published writer.  After graduation, Ware looks forward to having an opportunity to put his hands-on experience to work in his chosen profession.

Ashlee Ivery is a senior at Texas Southern University majoring in journalism with a minor in radio/television/film.  A native of Dallas, Ivery is an aspiring photographer/videographer with a passion for all things entertainment. She hopes to one day start her own photography business.  Ivery finds inspiration in role models like Barbara Jordan, a strong advocate of change for the better. Her motto is: Go big or go home!

Kendall McCoy is a senior at Texas Southern University majoring in radio/television/film, with a broadcast journalism minor.  McCoy's passion for media dates all the back to middle school where he anchored "Inside Hartman" segments, produced and edited commercials for the show and even did a "drop" for KPRC's Weather with Wes segment.  McCoy is also a producer, writer and editor for TSU's TV on Demand.
