Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk special to one Houston woman

HOUSTON - This Saturday, hundreds of Houstonians will lace up their pink sneakers to help make breast cancer history. Local 2's Rachel McNeill has more on why the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is so special to one Houston woman.

Janie Taylor has been living with stage four cancer for 11 years and this week, she just started a phase one clinical trial and chemo.

"I've been fighting cancer for 23 years. Think of all the chemos that I've gone through and all the people that had to go through those clinical trials just so that I could utilize that chemotherapy. So I not only owe it to the people who did it for me I owe it to myself and I owe it to future generations," Taylor said.

This weekend, Taylor's family and friends will be by her side for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.

KPRC Local 2 is proud to sponsor this celebration of survivorship.

Taylor's Walking Warriors is one of the top fundraising teams, raising $10,000. Her devotion to the American Cancer Society stems from the first surgery she had as a 30-year-old mother of three.

"I woke up to these two amazing women at my bedside and they had this basket and they explained to me that because they removed my lymph nodes I may lose full range of my arms which I didn't even know," she said. "They were the only organization that reached out to me and they just showed up like little angels at my bedside."

Taylor is now dedicated to paying it forward.

"This walk, the money that we raise here, stays here. It stays here to help people like me who live in Houston and who need help," Taylor said.

Millions of people in more than 300 communities nationwide will join the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Money raised helps the American Cancer Society's mission to fight the disease with research, awareness and access to mammograms for women who need them.

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Walk is Saturday, May 10, at 9 a.m. at Reliant Park.
