HOUSTON - Harris County Judge Ed Emmett is on this week's Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall. He says the illegal immigration problem is caught up in politics with the children being used as pawns.
"The law says that they are to be repatriated to their countries and their families," he said. "But first you have to decide where did they come from and who are their families."
That takes time and that is the issue when deciding what to do with those waiting in limbo.
"At the end of the day they are children and we need to understand that and we need to deal with them as humanely as possible until they're repatriated."
Also this week Judge Emmett talks about the most recent plans in place to help southeast Texans during the 2014 Hurricane season and the new County program designed to help the mentally ill rather than putting them in jail and his take on the latest steps being considered for the Astrodome.
Also on this week's program, Richard Franke, President of the Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas. JA is taking a leading role in teaching personal finance and business skills to children while also taking an active role in helping solve the problem of developing the Houston workforce.
"We live in a much more complex world today," Franke said "We also see an environment today where many of the students feel they have to go to college and there are a lot of opportunities and lot of jobs out there that necessarily don't require a four year degree and pay very very well."
The very impressive JA story has many more details.
