Driver apologizes after passing school bus at bus stop in Crosby

CROSBY, Texas - A Crosby driver is apologizing after a dash camera captured him cutting off a stopped school bus full of kids.

Clay Stephens, 28, turned himself in to authorities Monday. The dash camera video shows his truck cutting off a Crosby ISD bus, as it was stopped, displaying flashing lights. "I realized from the moment it happened that it was a big mistake and I said out loud: 'I can't believe I just did that. That was really stupid'," Stephens said.

Stephens was on his way home from work when it happened on Bohemian Hall Road.

The video circulated across social media last week, upsetting the district and parents. "It was terrifying," said Sharonda Livings Perez. Her 7-year-old son got off the bus just a couple minutes after it happened.
"Everybody that drives has places to go and things to do, but you just need to be cautious of the school buses," Perez said.

Stephens says he can't agree more, which is why he decided to turn himself in. "It was the right thing to do," Stephens said."I care about Crosby, I care about the people in Crosby and I care about Crosby's kids. I genuinely do."

Stephens was cited by Precinct 3. A judge will determine his punishment.

He could face fines anywhere between $500 to more than $1,000.
