Get 2 Know Me
- Moved to Houston in 1969, the same year I graduated from high school.
- Attended S.H. Rider High School, in Wichita Falls, The University of Houston, and the University of Chicago, where I was a William Benton Fellow.
- Married to Joy Archer, the love of my life and best friend, for 38 years.
- I’ve received more than 50 awards from organizations including the Associated Press, Texas Association of Broadcasters, Houston Press Club, and the National Museum of the Cowboy.
A good reporter is the noblest work of God.
What made you want to get into news?
I never wanted to do anything else. Working as a journeyman reporter has given me a front row seat to the major events and personalities of our time, and the chance to provide a vital public service.
I’ve been fortunate enough to make my career in Houston, which is one of the best news towns in the country. I’ve worked with some of the most talented journalists in the business; folks who pursued the craft with honesty, accuracy, and passion.
It is more than a job – it’s a calling. And the fact that I’ve been able to practice it in this town and at Channel 2 for more 40 years makes me a lucky man.
