Surfers take advantage of churning seas in Galveston

GALVESTON, Texas – Surfers in Galveston caught some waves early Thursday as Tropical Storm Cindy lashed the coastline with gusty winds and rain.

Red flags flying on the beach could not keep about a half-dozen surfers away from the waters along Seawall Boulevard.

Laura Hartlieb said that she has not surfed in about five years, but she couldn’t pass up this chance.

"I used to surf quite a bit," Hartlieb said. "It’s supposed to be nice and clean this morning and kind of peter out by the end of the day, so I’m going to try it."

Other surfers said they tried to take on Mother Nature on Wednesday, but the conditions were not ideal. On Thursday, waves were highly visible and seas were choppy.

Hartlieb said she knows it is not smart to venture into the water during a storm.

“Hopefully, my mom doesn’t see me out here this morning before work,” Hartlieb joked.

Forecasters said strong rip currents will make swimming along the coast hazardous through Thursday.
