HOUSTON – A quick four-day field trip turned into an epic seven-day expedition for 25 students from Grady Middle School in Houston.
They became stranded in Boston after superstorm Sandy delayed flights and shut down airports.
The students and their chaperones were in Massachusetts to learn about American history, but they quickly got a different kind of lesson when they were forced to hunker down in their hotel rooms for three additional days.
"They're ready to be home. They've been wearing the same clothes," said principal Gretchen Kasper-Hoffman.
One eighth grade student told KPRC Local 2 he washed his clothes in the bathtub and used a blow dryer to dry them. Teachers had the students do school work in their hotel rooms and got creative with ways to keep them busy.
"They did go trick-or-treating in the hotel," Kasper-Hoffman said. "The hotel has been very good to them."
The students finally caught a flight home Thursday night and landed at Bush Intercontinental Airport just before 10 p.m.
"I was pretty worried, especially when watching the news and how huge the storm was," mom Lynn Singhoff said.
Most of the students said they're glad to be back and are actually looking forward to attending classes Friday back on campus.
