SAN JACINTO COUNTY, Texas – For families that live along the San Jacinto River, a little flooding is expected every couple of years.
"It's part of living on the river," said Brian Harmon.
But many still opted to leave the area on Friday when the water around their home started getting higher.
The Harris County Flood Control District told KPRC Local 2 the west fork of the river is out of its banks by 2 feet and could grow another 6 inches. It's runoff from the flooding in Cypress Creek.
"This is the first time in the last three years that this has happened since Ike," said Jackie Smelley, a resident who's keeping a close eye on the rising water. "From what I understand, it's going to come up a lot more."
The Harmon family decided to pack their things and head to a hotel. The items they can't bring with them have been moved to higher ground.
"We've got everything up on cinder blocks and buckets. We're doing the best we can," said Ashley Harmon.
The areas seeing the most flooding are just east of US 59 near Hammel Road.
