HOUSTON – Rain and storms drenched parts of southeast Texas on Monday and made a return visit early Tuesday.
"We started off the day with showers and at times, heavy rain across southeast Texas. Overnight, rainfall amounts were nearly 2 inches in some spots. An upper level disturbance, deep tropical moisture and daytime heating will trigger another round of showers and storms again this afternoon. We're also tracking a weak cold front which will stall out along our northern counties. Thanks to the rain, we'll only see afternoon highs in the mid 80s," KPRC Local 2 meteorologist Mary Lee said. "We did get a break from the rain this morning and now we've got this all over again that will continue as we head through the rest of your afternoon."
"Harris and Liberty counties were hit hardest Monday," said KPRC Local 2 chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley.
Approximately 2.76 inches of rain fell in Cypresswood, 2.56 inches was reported in Lake Livingston, 2.48 inches fell in Channelview and 1.52 inches was reported in downtown Houston.
"Some viewers reported as much as 3 to 5 inches of rain in their area," Billingsley said.
Street flooding made driving difficult in southeast Houston outside the Indigo Falls apartment complex on Nathanial and Ledge. Some drivers avoided the area instead of driving through water that pushed over the curb.
The area had street flooding again on Tuesday.
"Every time it rains, it floods -- every time it rains over here," said Ernest Buch, a resident.
"All they gotta do is clean those gutter ducts out. They are clogged. That's it," resident Vincent Looney said. "Three years I've been here and it's always been a problem."
KPRC Local 2 called the city of Houston about the street flooding on Nathanial. Officials said tree roots are clogging the drains and removing the roots will cost the city millions of dollars. The city is working on finding a contractor to fix it. Cameras will also be placed underground to confirm what's causing the flooding in the 2,300 feet of storm drains.
The wet weather will be around all week.
"Prepare for more rain as we move through the week," Billingsley said. "Tuesday, I think we'll go through the exact same thing we did today."
"We have rain chances all week long, even into the weekend, so keep those umbrellas and rain jackets handy," Lee said.
In the Pacific, Tropical Storm Daniel and Hurricane Emilia will continue on a westerly track out to sea. It's quiet in the Gulf, Caribbean and Atlantic.
