Ozone Alert Saturday for Harris, Galveston & Brazoria counties

HOUSTON – The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has issued an Ozone Action Day for Harris, Galveston and Brazoria counties for Saturday, April 19.

High levels of ozone are expected Saturday, which could pose health problems for people with respiratory problems like asthma, bronchitis, and COPD.

The elevated ozone levels occur from the interaction between sunlight and air pollutants coming from burning fossil fuels like gasoline.  The ozone production itself, combined with light wind, will result in high ozone concentrations during daylight hours.

To help minimize ozone production and high ozone concentrations, conserve energy, minimize driving during the day, refuel cars before sunrise or after sunset, and avoid cutting grass or using any gasoline-burning engine.
