Houston records another warmer-than-normal February

Temperatures above normal across Texas for second year in row

HOUSTON – February 2013, went into the record books as another warmer-than-normal month in southeast Texas.

Based on data from the National Weather Service, from College Station to Galveston average daily temperatures ranged from 2 to more than 4 degrees above normal.  It is the fifth month in a row that temperatures have averaged above normal.

Looking on the positive side, February does not rank as one of the 10 warmest on record for the city, so we can call it a moderately warm month.  Also, even though we're less than a week into March, temperatures have been running about 5 degrees below normal so far for this month, which is good news.

The overall picture still raises concerns.  February data signal a continuation of the larger trend of warm, dry weather that keeps the threat of drought a very dire reality for the area.  And, with the growing season and fire season right around the corner, the trends in our weather pattern become increasingly important.
