Disturbance 95L heading for northeast Mexico

HOUSTON – The tropical disturbance, designated 95L by the National Hurricane Center, was moving steadily northwest just to the east of the Mexican coast near Tampico Friday morning.  It will likely continue this motion and reach land later Friday south of Brownsville. What remains of the disturbance is expected to be absorbed by the cold front system moving to the Texas Gulf coast on Saturday.

Satellite shows there is a little more shower and thunderstorm activity with 95L Friday morning compared with Thursday morning, and surface observations suggest a weak low pressure center may have developed. While it still might become organized enough to become a tropical depression, it is unlikely that it will further strengthen into a tropical storm.

The big story with 95L is the stream of tropical moisture associated with it pouring into Texas from the Gulf of Mexico. This level of moisture, combined with the front and the remnants of what was Manuel moving into Texas out of northern Mexico will continue to produce widespread heavy rainfall. While some locations could see flooding, for drought stricken rural areas this widespread heavy rain will be a blessing.

Most folks who drown in Texas floods either drive into or walk into flood waters.  Heed the advice of this slogan should you be out and about: "Turn Around, Don't Drown."
