Could rain dampen Texans tailgating?

A cold front is now likely to bring us rain by Sunday.

HOUSTON – There's been a shift in the forecast for this coming weekend, and it includes rain and some cooler temperatures.

A cold front that had been forecast to stay to our north, and keep rain showers to our north, now looks like it's going to sag far enough south to bring some relief to our current mini heat wave and bring some rain to Texan tailgaters on Sunday.

The cold front is a Pacific front, not an Arctic front, so the "cool" air behind it really isn't all that cool.  As its name suggests, a Pacific front ushers cooler air in from the Pacific ocean to our west.  With an Arctic front, the cooler air comes in from the north, out of Canada, and is usually MUCH cooler than a Pacific air mass.  All things considered, we should see a few degrees shaved off our current near-90 highs when our Pacific front slides in on Sunday and Monday.  Look for highs in the mid 80s and morning lows in the mid to upper 60s.

As for rainfall, expect about a 40 percent chance starting Sunday.  Sunday doesn't look like a washout at this point, but there may be pockets of heavy downpours.  A few scattered showers may linger into Monday as the front stalls overhead, but expect Sunday to be the wetter of the two days.  I know this isn't great news for you Houston Texan fans who are planning a tailgate before the big game this weekend, but at least you've got a couple of days to prepare for sketchy weather should it materialize.

As always, keep up to speed with the forecast at JustWeather.com and on KPRC Local 2 News and we'll keep you ahead of any weather changes that happen!
