PHOENIX -- A rescue team waded through high water in a dangerous operation Wednesday to reach two cars stranded in rushing floodwaters in North Scottsdale, Ariz., Phoenix television station KPHO-TV reported.
One motorist climbed through the sunroof of the vehicle and was quickly embraced by a squad of nine rescuers. The rescue team reached the other motorist stuck in the other car in 3- to 5-feet deep water.
Severe flooding was reported in several sections of the northern Paradise Valley area, and an intersection of two major roads there was heavily flooded. Forecasters said about 2 inches of rain fell in the Phoenix area on Thursday and that the flooding was contained in isolated areas.
All streets were flooded in the Indian Bend Wash area, and motorists were stalling out as they attempted to drive through an area at Invergordon Road and Mockingbird Lane in North Scottsdale. Aerial shots from a KPHO-TV news helicopter showed a vehicle swept away and stranded by flood waters.
At Paradise Valley Mall, authorities reported that the food court was under 2 feet of water.
