Stormy Weather On Its Way

Flooding Possible In Some Parts Of Southeast Texas

POSTED: Thursday, October 29, 2009
UPDATED: 6:37 pm CDT October 29, 2009

Potentially severe storms are on the way and could cause flooding in parts of the Houston area, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.

Tornado warnings, severe thunderstorm warnings, flash flood warnings and a wind advisory were issued Friday. A tornado watch has been issued until 9 p.m. Thursday.

"I think for us the story is going to be the heavy rain," KPRC Local 2 meteorologist Anthony Yanez said. "It looks like the front is arriving at about 10 p.m."

The rain will stick around throughout the night and into Friday morning.

"The line does not move until about 7 a.m. tomorrow," Yanez said. "That's the problem. If you have any cells that sit right on top of you while you're sleeping, very easily you could 4 to 6 inches of rain where you live when you wake up. I think most of us will see 1 to 3 inches of rain, but with the rain we saw a couple of days ago, the bayous have been swelling. This could really cause some problems tomorrow morning."

Not only will Friday be wet, it will also be about 20 degrees cooler than Thursday with a high of 60 degrees.

"Once we get to tomorrow afternoon, the rain starts to move out of here and our weekend is salvaged," Yanez said.

The threat of more rain across Texas prompted Gov. Rick Perry to activate state resources.

"As rainfall continues, the state is taking precautionary measures in the event assistance is needed," Perry said. "I appreciate the brave men and women who are always ready to respond to an event that places Texans in harm’s way."

Military personnel and equipment is on standby in the Austin, Beaumont, Houston, Longview, Lufkin and Beaumont areas.
